EndNote FAQs

What citation styles can I use with EndNote?

  • EndNote has thousands of citation styles but always double-check that your citations are correct when using Cite While You Write. EndNote can format citations quickly; however, they may not always be accurate especially when there have been recent changes to citation style guidelines.

What is Cite While You Write?

  • Cite While You Write (CYWY) is a plug-in for Microsoft Word that is included with EndNote when you install it on your computer. The plug-in is automatically added to Microsoft Word and can be found in an EndNote tab in the Word menu. For more instructions on how to use the CYWY plug-in, please refer to the "Using EndNote with Word" tab.

When does my EndNote library sync?

  • If you select the “sync automatically” option in EndNote, your library will be synced automatically every 15 minutes. However, if you try to close the library before it has synced, EndNote will alert you. Each time you make a change in EndNote Online, it will sync immediately

Can I search databases in EndNote?

  • You can search certain databases in EndNote such as the Library of Congress through the "Online Search" tab. However, for most Duquesne databases, you will have to search in your browser and then download the citations from there.

Can I use EndNote after I've written citations manually in my paper?

  • EndNote cannot be used to organize citations that have been manually entered. While it is possible to combine manual and EndNote citations in a single paper, it is not possible to edit the manual citations using EndNote functions. It is recommended to use EndNote for all citations. If you have manually entered a citation, you can still cite it using the EndNote plug-in by first entering it into EndNote.

Can I delete a PDF from my computer once I've attached it to my EndNote citation?

  • Yes, you can delete a PDF from your computer once it is attached to an EndNote citation. However, make sure not to delete it from your My EndNote Library.data file.

Why won't EndNote find the full text of an article I know we have?

  • For certain databases, like EBSCOhost and JSTOR, the find full-text option does not work. To address this issue, you can click on the link in the article or search the article title in DUQSearch and click on "PDF Full text," then download the PDF to attach it manually to your citation.

I have 1,000+ citations on different topics. How can I organize them?

  • You can use smart groups to organize your citations by keywords/author/journal/etc. If you have smart groups set up, each time you add more citations to your library they will automatically be distributed into these groups, if applicable.

I forgot my password. What do I do?

  • Visit myendnoteweb.com and click "forgot password?" to have a reset email sent to you. Make sure to update your new password in your desktop EndNote application before adding any new citations, or you may lose them.

How long can I keep EndNote?

  • You can keep EndNote as long as you are a Duquesne-affiliated user. After graduation, continue using EndNote Online (myendnoteweb.com) for free. It has less functionality than the desktop version but still includes Cite While You Write and stores up to 50,000 citations and 2GB of citation attachments. Transferring institutions? Call EndNote Support to transfer your files over to your new institution.
