Step 6: Setting EndNote as Default Citation Manager

When you open a citation after download, it may open in another citation manager you have installed or it may ask you to choose an application. To have your citations open automatically in your EndNote library, follow the steps below to set EndNote as your default citation manager.

 

For Windows:

  1. Click the Start button windows logo  >  Settings settings gear logo  >  Apps  >  Default Apps 
  2. Select Choose default apps by file type
  3. Scroll down until you find .ris file. You may see another citation manager set as default. Click on the program and change it to EndNote

 

For Macs:

  1. After downloading a citation, click the Finder icon mac finder logo  >  Downloads 
  2. Right-click on the citation and select Get Info > Open With
  3. Next, use the dropdown box to select EndNote
  4. Click Change all and click Continue. EndNote will now automatically open any file that has the .ris file extension.
