Backup a Library

Backing up your EndNote Library

Save and backup your EndNote Library regularly to ensure you do not lose your work. This is especially important when making any major changes to your library, such as adjusting settings or sharing your library with other users. To do this, create a compressed EndNote Desktop library. Compressed copies are also the best way to email your library. However, please note that the recipient must have the desktop version of EndNote to view the .enlx file.

Note: We recommend saving backup copies of your library to a flash drive or the Cloud. Do not work on a copy you saved to these locations. To use a backup copy as your working copy, download it onto your computer's documents folder and work on it from there. Make sure to always create a new backup copy.

To create a compressed library:
1. In the EndNote toolbar, select File > Compressed Library (.enlx)
2. The Compressed Library (.enlx) dialog box will open. Choose from the following options:
  • Create or Create & Email your EndNote library
  • With or Without File Attachments
  • Compress All References in Library, or Selected Reference(s), or All References in Group/Group Set
