Sierra How-To Guide: Adding a Hold

Adding Holds in Sierra

Placing a hold is a self-service available through the library's public catalog interface.

However, there may be times where a user is unfamiliar with how to place a hold online, is requesting something be held over the phone, or cannot locate something in the stacks and wishes for us to search for it. We can place a hold through Sierra in situations such as this.

Placing a hold for a patron

**In order for these instructions to work, go to Admin, Settings, New Record. Be sure the New Bib and New Item templates are set to Always Prompt for Template.**

1. Go to Function dropdown

  • Look for the Circulation module

  • Select the Check-Out function

2. Enter the patron’s name (nLastName, First Name)

3. Select Holds from the options on the left-hand side of the screen. In the Holds information, you should see a button called Add Hold. Click this.

Searching for the item: A search box will appear. In this search box, you may use the left dropdown box to change the search terms, then search for the item by title, barcode, etc.

When the item information appears, the summary information will show what copies are available. Select the copy you wish to hold, then click the Hold Selected Item button.

Confirming the hold: A pop-up box will ask you to confirm the hold. Click the second option, Place Hold.

A second pop-up will appear, with more detailed information regarding the pickup location, hold expiration date, etc.

Click Ok. You have now placed a hold!

If someone no longer wants their held item, you can remove the hold.
