Sierra How-To Guide: Emptying Bookbins

Emptying Bookbins

The library follows a particular process for emptying the book bins. While it may not seem important, it's designed to minimize error during our peak times.

Emptying the bins: Bins should only be processed when full. Empty both in the inside and the outside book bins. Place on a truck and take to the book sensitizer. Sensitize each book.

As you sensitize each book, flip it down so if you get called away, you know where you left off. If a book does not sensitize, set it aside to add tattletape.

Checking in: One at a time, flip each book up and using the Check-In function, scan each barcode.

Location codes: You'll note after the call number is listed a location code. While you may not know all the locations, the code can give you clues as to where the item goes. All Gumberg locations start with g. The following number indicates which floor the item belongs on. Letters or numbers after the floor number indicate a specialized collection.

System messages: As you check in materials, you need to keep an eye out for any special messages which may appear. These indicate there is something about the material that you need to address.

Sorting onto trucks: After the materials are all checked in, they should be sorted onto the trucks and special shelving areas. If you don't know where something goes, ask!

Let's take a look at some of the messages you may have to address when checking in materials.
