Sierra How-To Guide: Holds

Left Tab Menu

If a user has holds, it displays within the Check Out function.

To review holds, select the Holds tab on the left tab menu.

Holds

The number of holds listed on a user's account includes holds that are both available for pickup and those still down in the stacks.

Holds are typically a self-service, meaning that users place holds via our website and then we run a report listing the books to be pulled from the shelves. Our turnaround time for holds is usually under 24 hours. If you need to place a hold for a user, refer to this advanced option.

Holds status: You can tell which holds are available by looking at the status of the holds. Click on the holds list, which show you the titles requested.

The status, on the far right, will tell you which books are ready for pickup.

Available means that the book is available in the stacks; we have not pulled it. Once it is pulled and processed the status will change to Ready For Pickup. If a user no longer wants an item he requested, refer to the advanced documentation to learn how to remove a hold.

Checking out holds: If you scan a user's ID and the holds tab is red, it means they have holds to pick up. Holds are filed alphabetically by last name on the holds shelves. Retrieve the books and check out to the user as you would any other item.

Note: Gumberg Library owned books, EZBorrow books (blue band), and ILL books (orange band) will show up as holds, and should be checked out in Sierra. When checking out EZBorrow and ILLiad books, be sure to type in "b" before scanning the barcode. Sierra will not recognize the barcode if "b" is not entered.

Next, we will look at how to process fines.
