This guide defines open science in a higher education setting and provides recommendations on how to implement open science

Role of Academic Libraries


Academic libraries and their staff can utilize a variety of tools to introduce students and faculty to open science

  1. Workshops that can act as introductory courses to open science concepts .
  2. Webinars that fulfill the same purpose as workshops but are more accessible to both students and faculty.
  3. Librarians can hold classroom visits for different departments to provide a demo of open science in the classroom.
  4. Library staff and student volunteers can hold pop-up tables around campus to hand out promotional materials and gauge student interest.

Other resources for students and faculty include

  1. LibGuides or research guides that students and faculty can access on a library's website. These guides can be directly integrated into a course's curriculum.
  2. Instructional videos on implementing open science initiatives as a student or faculty member.
  3. Handouts that promote open science events or courses.

Sharing research and progress to other institutions through

  1. Institutional repositories (e.g., Duquesne Scholarship Repository - Open Data) 
  2. Conferences and publications

Developing policies that support open science

  1.  Host in-person and online training on implementing open science practices.
  2.  Partner with citizen science initiatives and promote community events.
