Open Science

This guide defines open science in a higher education setting and provides recommendations on how to implement open science

Open Science in a University and College Setting

Similar to how the principles of open science may differ across organizations and institutions, the implementation of open science initiatives in a higher education setting such as a university or college will be different as well. The execution of the aforementioned core tenets of open science will involve three different, prominent groups: academic libraries, faculty, and students. Other stakeholders can and should be added to the discourse on open science.

All three groups can perform actions that bolster open science initiatives. Similar to how open science can only succeed if the scientific community, general public, and other stakeholders actively participate in the effort, the success of open science in a higher education setting will require the active participation of all three groups. Ultimately, open science is largely a long-term effort that can span years, and constant feedback from all three groups is a necessity to foster growth, especially if an institution is seeking to implement open science initiatives for the first time.
