Reference Material, Checklists, and Flowchart Resources

The following resources are available to provide procedural steps in conducting your evidence synthesis. Important note - though these resources are distinctly for systematic reviews, there is useful information for those interested in performing scoping reviews as well.

AMSTAR Checklist
This checklist notes steps needing to be taken to conduct a systematic review, specifically in the healthcare fields. This tool can be used to inform necessary pieces of the review.
Cochrane Review Handbook
This segment of the Cochrane Review Handbook provides guidelines on developing a protocol for a systematic review. Keep in mind, to conduct a Cochrane Review, researchers must first register and be approved by Cochrane.
PRISMA 2020 Flow Diagrams
Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) offers flowcharts to direct researchers on how to conduct systematic reviews in a step-by-step depending on the search strategies used. Resources are available for both new reviews and updates to old reviews.

Software/Programs to Use

When conducting large-scale literature reviews, reference organization is essential in preventing redundancy in findings. Review the resources below, both of which are free to Duquesne students, staff, and faculty!

Covidence
Covidence is an online resource that allows for a research team to collaborate in systematic review work. Reference citations and full text can be uploaded for consistent team member access.
EndNote
EndNote is a citation tool that ensures consistency and management of references. EndNote is useful in creating bibliographies and can be helpful in ensuring researchers aren't repeating articles.
