The Vietnam War was the defining event of recent U.S. history, a tragic struggle that cost the lives of 58,000 Americans and 970,000 Vietnamese, and that is still being debated today. The three-volume Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War, edited by Spencer Tucker, has been hailed as the most comprehensive reference work on that watershed event.

In New Perspectives of the Vietnam War, editor William Schoenl has focused on the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) allies of the United States to get beyond the ethnocentrism of "US views" and the amorphousness of "international perspectives." With the exception of South Korea, only SEATO allies- Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand- sent troops to support the US in the Vietnam War. Great Britain, a SEATO ally, adopted a middle-ground position that supported the US diplomatically but refused to send troops. France and Pakistan, the remaining SEATO allies, opposed the War.

The Vietnam War: A Study in the Making of American Policy by Michael P. Sullivan
What are the "lessons" of Vietnam? Many previous discussions have focused on narrow or misleading questions, rehashing military decisions, for example, or offering blow-by-blow accounts of Washington infighting, or castigating foreign-policy decision-makers. Michael Sullivan undertakes instead a broad and systematic treatment of the American experience in Vietnam, using a variety of theoretical perspectives to study several aspects of that experience, including the decision-making process and decision-makers' perceptions of the war; public opinion and "mood" before, during, and after the war; and the Vietnam War in relation to the Cold War and to power structures and patterns of violence in the international system.
Voices from the Vietnam War: Stories from American, Asian, and Russian Veterans by Xiaobing Li
The twenty-two intimate stories in the book feature the experiences of American, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and North and South Vietnamese veterans, representing the views of both anti-Communist and Communist participants, including Chinese officers of the PLA, a Russian missile-training instructor, and a KGB spy. These narratives humanize and contextualize the war's events while shedding light on aspects of the war previously unknown to Western scholars.
