Practitioner Resources for Treating Chemical Exposures

Resources for health care professionals treating patients exposed to hazardous chemicals.

Treatment Guidelines

Treatment guidelines for chemical exposure cases can be found on many commonly used resources for health care professionals.

Several government agencies also maintain guidelines for treatment of various chemical exposures. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) maintains peer reviewed Toxicological Profiles, which include Medical Management Guidelines (MMGs) for many of the 300 substances currently indexed in its collection. The Department of Veterans Affairs also maintains resources for patient care related to known exposure sources such as water contamination at Camp Lejune, NC.

Specialized Care Referrals

In some cases, such as chemical ingestion, or exposure to an unknown chemical agent, referrals to specialized treatment or expertise may be necessary. The resources below link to directories of poison control centers, specialized providers and clinic sites. Search for specific chemical agent exposure treatments or for subfields such as chemical pathology using the filters in the directories to find specialists in your area with the best expertise for your patient.
