Introduction

Uncle Tom's Cabin, subtitled Life among the Lowly, was not at first published as a print book (the way we now read it). Rather it was published in installments in the abolitionist weekly the National Era. The story gained readership and popularity because of the detail Harriet Beecher Stowe includes and the attention she brings to the lives that slaves lived. Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of the most influential pieces of writing in the history of the United States. This guide will provide you with access to background sources, print and ebooks, journal articles, high quality websites, primary sources, and other types of resources on this important work.
