SIMULEX Duquesne 2023: India-Pakistan

A Gumberg Library research guide

Introduction

The topic of this year's SIMULEX Duquesne is the on-going conflict on the Pakistan-India border. The game's focus is on the Indian Subcontinent generally, which includes the Kashmir Conflict, but will also draw in other factors, such as:

  • China's ambitions in the region, which will be a major factor, as well as its dissatisfaction with the current borders with India (over which it launched an invasion in 1962--prompting India's decision to develop nuclear weapons).
  • The abrupt instability in Pakistan, a major client of China, which will be very concerning to Beijing.
  • The declining security situation in Afghanistan as a major Pakistani client, the Taliban, struggles to contain a vicious insurgency led by ISIS-K, and a growing insurgency sparked by other non-Pashun tribal and former Afghan national government remnants.
  • India's growing preoccupation with its own insurgency problems, notably the challenge presented by the Maoist Naxalite Movement, which controls about 20% of its rural hinterland.
