This research guide will connect you to primary works, reference works, print books and e-books, databases for articles, and other information sources for Japanese Literature, c. 20th century, encompassing the Meiji era (1863-1912) until the Heisei era (1989-2019).

The Japanese literary era from Meiji to Heisei encompasses various cultural shifts. Western influences begin with the Meiji era through the introduction of Western philosophy, politics, as well as literature. The periods that follow thus observe the changes that occurred out of these influences, such as democratization, the expansion of the Japanese empire, multiple wars, and the impacts of globalization.

The Japanese naming convention consists of a family name, followed by a given name.

This article follows this arrangement, and is formatted as follows: FAMILY NAME given name (Kanji).
