What is Information Literacy?

Information Literacy is defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries as "the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning."

Since information literacy is interdisciplinary, all faculty play a role in teaching it. The library assists faculty with the information literacy of their students by providing instruction and resources that emphasize how students can understand the information environment of their discipline, find valuable resources to their discipline, and engage in the ethical use of information when creating and sharing information.

Information Literacy at Duquesne

One of the primary ways Gumberg Library fulfills its mission is through its support of Duquesne's information literacy efforts.

The library's instruction programs are designed to meet the expectations of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

They follow the information literacy framework endorsed by the Association of College and Research Libraries for information literacy competency.

Duquesne's Core Curriculum includes information literacy among its general goals and student learning outcomes. Students are required to take one credit of information literacy instruction in an approved Core course.
