Women in STEM: Ellen Ochoa

Ellen Ochoa Ellen Ochoa (1958-) began working at NASA in 1988 as a research engineer before becoming an astronaut two years later. Ellen was the first Latina in space, and flew to space on four different missions. She is currently the director of the Johnson Space Center, only the second woman to hold the position and the first person of Hispanic descent. Ellen holds three patents for optical systems.
