While it is not always easy to work with ACS microdata, there are ways to get help.  Also, some simple tips will make your experience with the ACS much more enjoyable:

1. The immense size of the ACS datasets can result in long processing times.  Consider creating a data set with only the observations and variables that you're interested in.  

2. The IPUMS website allows you to download ACS microdata in a variety of formats while the Census Bureau only makes ACS microdata available in SAS and CSV format. 

3.  If you get stuck you can reach out to the Census Bureau through the ACS help page or email
