Steps for Writing a Narrative Review
- Think of a research topic and define the scope
- Conduct initial research to see what literature is available on your topic
- Gather scholarly sources that are relevant to your topic and capture citation details. For more substantive research projects, it is recommended that you utilize EndNote.
- Begin analyzing your sources and ask yourself:
- After an initial investigation of the literature, redefine your scope and/or question if necessary
- Continue searching for and analyzing scholarly sources by utilizing library resources
- After identifying themes/topics and gathering evidence, begin mapping out your review
- Write your review in stages, do not try to write it all in one sitting.
- Once you're finished writing, conduct a review and make any necessary edits. Utilize the Writing Center if you need help during this stage.
- Prepare to submit your narrative review by giving it a final inspection. Success!
