Steps for Writing a Narrative Review

  1. Think of a research topic and define the scope
  2. Conduct initial research to see what literature is available on your topic
  3. Gather scholarly sources that are relevant to your topic and capture citation details. For more substantive research projects, it is recommended that you utilize EndNote.
  4. Begin analyzing your sources and ask yourself:
  5. After an initial investigation of the literature, redefine your scope and/or question if necessary
  6. Continue searching for and analyzing scholarly sources by utilizing library resources
  7. After identifying themes/topics and gathering evidence, begin mapping out your review
  8. Write your review in stages, do not try to write it all in one sitting.
  9. Once you're finished writing, conduct a review and make any necessary edits. Utilize the Writing Center if you need help during this stage.
  10. Prepare to submit your narrative review by giving it a final inspection. Success!
