Understanding Privilege Becoming an agent for social justice change is a process and requires you to act with intentionality towards your goals and continued development of skills. Niteto addresses the agent journey from indifference to the emergence of an anti-oppression consciousness. A consequence of this awakened state include feelings of guilt and shame surrounding your privilege. Those emotions, while common, are ineffective tools in the movement to dismantle structural oppression.

Allyship

Aspiring social justice ally identity development Individuals who are supportive of social justice efforts are not always effective in their anti-oppression efforts. Some who genuinely aspire to act as social justice allies can be harmful, despite their best intentions. These folks can ultimately perpetuate the system of oppression they seek to change. Different underlying motivations of those who aspire to be allies can lead to differences in effectiveness, consistency, outcome, and sustainability. The conceptual model presented here, using underlying motivation to frame the different issues and challenges facing those who are aspiring allies, is offered as a tool for critical self-reflection and for guidance in developing other aspiring allies for social justice.
Acting in Solidarity: Cross‐Group Contact between Disadvantaged Group Members and Advantaged Group Allies Abstract The actions of advantaged group activists (sometimes called “allies”) are admirable, and they likely make meaningful contributions to the movements they support. However, a nuanced understanding of the role of advantaged group allies must also consider the potential challenges of their participation. Both in their everyday lives and during their activist work, advantaged group allies are especially likely to have direct contact with disadvantaged group members. This article considers when such contact may harm rather than help resistance movements by disadvantaged groups. We also suggest that to avoid these undermining effects, advantaged group allies must effectively communicate support for social change, understand the implications of their own privilege, offer autonomy‐oriented support, and resist the urge to increase their own feelings of inclusion by co‐opting relevant marginalized social identities.
