What is an ISBN? (Book or Book Chapter Requests)

  • What is an ISBN?- International Standard Book Number, a ten-digit or thirteen-digit number assigned to every book before publication, recording such details as language, provenance, and publisher.

  • Why should you provide it?
    • The ISBN is specific to the edition of the book; it is the most accurate way to find a book in the system. If a book has a common title, this helps us to request the correct book and prevents incorrect items arriving for you at Gumberg Library!

  • Where can I find the ISBN?
    • The easiest way to find the ISBN is through DUQ search or online retailers. Please see below.

When searching DUQ search, the ISBN is listed in the information under the book title:

When searching Amazon, it is listed under the Product details:

When searching Barnes and Noble it is listed under the Product Details:

What is an ISSN? (Article Requests)

  • What is an ISSN?
    • International Standard Serial Number, an eight-digit number assigned to many serial publications such as newspapers, magazines, annuals, and series of books.

  • Why should I provide it?
    • By providing the ISSN, in many cases, the system can automatically find your article or book chapter. You’ll get your requested article much faster if you provide the ISSN.
    • If a print and an online ISSN are given for a journal, please provide the print ISSN.

  • Where can I find it?

When searching DUQ search, click on the article. You will find the ISSN listed under the article title:
