Requesting Books Online

For current Duquesne students, faculty, and staff: please follow the steps below to request Gumberg materials for patio pick up or free delivery to your residence (US addresses only). Most items will be available for pick up within three business days.

Use DUQSearch to search for materials. DUQSearch is located on the main page of the library's website, and at the top of most library webpages.

When you select search, you will be prompted to login with your Multipass credentials, then authenticate using Duo.

Once logged in, you will be presented with the results of your search. In most cases the number of results will be very large because it defaults to searching for print AND online items. For instance, in the example below there are over 2,500 results.

undefined

To lower the number of results, refine your results on the left-hand side of the page. Select Library Catalog Only. Once your results have been refined, you will notice that the number of results is reduced. Search the results until you find what you are looking for. Select Retrieve Catalog Item when you are ready to request the item.

undefined

Once you select Retrieve Catalog Item, you will be directed to the catalog record for the item you are searching for. At the top of the page, select the checkmark Request/Hold button above the item.

undefined

You will be prompted to enter your name and 16 digit number on the front of your Duquesne ID. Please give at least 3 business days when selecting your "Cancel if not filled by" date.

undefined

Library staff will pull your items and have them ready for you to pick up within 3 business days. You will receive an email when your materials are ready for pick up.

If you would like your items shipped to your residence, please go to Residential Shipping for the most up to date information.

Shipping Materials to You

UPDATE

Gumberg Library’s residential shipping program has been met with great success during the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown, providing numerous scholars with hundreds of titles delivered by UPS right to their door. Now we are beginning the exciting work of reopening, along with other academic and public libraries across the nation and world! In order to ensure we can continue to support the research needs of our scholars regardless of their location, we find it necessary to update our residential shipping policy.

Borrowing:

As of July 1, 2021, Gumberg Library will ship up to 10 books once a week to a residential address. This book count includes books from the Gumberg Library collection as well as books borrowed from our lending partner programs, E-ZBorrow and Interlibrary Loan. As it is for in-person checkouts, a patron may not have more than 100 items checked out to their Gumberg Library account at a time.

Returning:

Gumberg Library will continue to provide return UPS labels. Rather than including paper return labels with the book shipments, simply complete the Label Request Form with the number of books you are returning, and we will email you a return e-label to your @duq.edu inbox. We will send one e-label per week at your request.

We encourage you to review our Scan and Deliver service as well as search our robust ebook collections for electronic access to articles, chapters, and books. If you would like expert assistance in finding the very best resources for your research, please contact your liaison librarian!

Returns

For on-site returns, drop your bagged items in the bins at the Gumberg Library entrance. All items will be quarantined for 72 hours, so items may appear on your account for several days after you return them.

You can also request a prepaid UPS return label by completing the Return E-Label Request form. Pack up your library items, take them to a UPS drop-off, and we’ll take care of the rest. For more information about returning items, please visit Residential Shipping.

Gumberg is also able to receive items from other libraries. Materials are quarantined for 72 hours before being processed in our system so there will be a slight delay between delivery and processing.

Expectations of Library Users and Library Staff

Gumberg is taking extra precautions this year to keep you safe while using the library. Expectations are for the safety of all users. Please do the following before visiting:

  • Wear your mask at all times you are in the library (except when taking a quick snack or drink break or when you're in a private study room with the door closed)
  • Don't visit if you're ill or have a fever
  • Bring all your supplies with you as the library is not providing dry erase markers, pens, pencils, staplers, etc.
  • Take your own computer, tablet, or other electronic device with you to the library
  • Be prepared to socially distance when using the library; group study is not permitted at this time

Gumberg's Steps for Safety

Campus facilities crew members will be working hard to keep our physical spaces clean and disinfected. Library staff are enforcing and participating in social distancing and mask wearing. Signs have been placed throughout the entire building reminding users and staff to use the library safely.

Some of the other steps that we have taken are:

  • Seating throughout the building has been reduced to one chair per table and socially distanced to allow 6 feet between tables and chairs
  • Limiting the items that users can currently check out - no study room keys, white board markers, charging cables, Library of Things, etc.
  • Encouraging students, faculty, and staff to utilize online resources and virtual meetings with librarians

  • Quarantining all returned materials in addition to all returned packages for 72 hours before circulating
  • Reducing operating hours to allot more time for sanitizing spaces
  • Providing disinfectant wipes to clean study spaces before and after use
  • Offering flexible pick-up and delivery options for books and other library materials
  • Placing hand sanitizer stations throughout every floor and either side of each elevator
