The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Book Discussion: March 25, 2020, 3:00 - 4:15 PM, Power Center Ballroom - Fides Shepperson Suite

Register for the Discussion on March 25 @ 3:00 PM

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is the featured book selection of the Spring 2020 Social Justice Reading Club. This New York Times Bestseller and Coretta Scott King Honor Book tackles themes of racism and police violence from the perspective of a young girl who witnesses her best friend’s murder. This semester’s discussion will be part of The Day of Learning and Speaking Out on March 25th, and will be led by Dr. Alydia Thomas, Associate Director for Student Development and Programming, Terra Merkey, Gumberg Music Librarian, and Meg Pankiewicz, an English teacher at Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg. Pankiewicz leads students at Canon-McMillan in the creation of “No Place for Hate,” an anti-racist initiative that helps create an atmosphere where all students can thrive.

The Social Justice Reading Club was developed by Gumberg library faculty in 2018 to unite and engage faculty, students, and staff in meaningful dialogue around a good book. All are welcome and encouraged to either read The Hate U Give or watch the 2018 film adaptation and then join the discussion on March 25th. Gumberg Library has a copy of the DVD and several copies of the book to check out. For more information, please contact Terra Merkey at merkeyt@duq.edu.
