A Century Since Scopes: Teaching Evolution in the US Public Schools: Creation Science

Creation Science

New interest throughout society in modern science in the late ‘50s threatened the automatic assumption that the Bible held real evidence to explain how the earth and its living things came to be. The response of conservative evangelical Christians was to create their own institutions and their own science to compete with modern biology and geology. In 1961, Henry Morris and John Whitcomb published the creationist classic, The Genesis Flood. This book argued that the Genesis creation stories were literally true, that the old age of the earth is an illusion, that geological features (including the fossil record) are the result of
Noah’s flood, and that this could be proved in scientifically. This period also saw the establishment of the Creation Science Research Center and later, the Institute for Creation Research which still exists today.
