Showing Videos in Online Classes

Due to TEACH Act restrictions, it's rarely acceptable to show an entire video in class:

The TEACH Act amendment to the Copyright Act, codified at § 110(2), permits the performance of a reasonable and limited portion of films in an online classroom.

Using Video Clips

Many of our streaming video resources permit you to make clips for your class without infringing on a film's copyright.
You will find instructions on how to create clips on each site.

Showing the Entire Video

If you believe it is necessary to show the entire work, please follow these steps:

Check to see if the video is available through Gumberg by searching the catalog and streaming sources.
Request that Gumberg purchase the video with public performing rights if necessary.
Consult with your subject librarian to help you find comparable content that can be shown in your class if necessary.
If you own a copy on DVD, and Gumberg cannot obtain a streaming license, request permission from the rights holder and fill out the TEACH Act Checklist. Do not show the video without permission.
