Create your own story @ your library

National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers to their schools, campuses and communities. It is also the perfect time to visit your community or campus library in order to make a small change in your life or a big change in the world. Libraries have always been places of opportunity and one of the best values in the community.

The Gumberg Library, your campus library, offers books, journals, databases and many other electronic resources that can help you create the story you need to succeed. The librarians and library staff at the Gumberg Library are willing to help you achieve your goals.

      History of National Library Week

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954.

The committee's goals were ambitious. They ranged from "encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life." In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries.

With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!" National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, ALA assumed full sponsorship. National Library Week is observed each year in April.

One Book, One Community Special Event

You are invited to join colleagues and friends on April 11 in the Africa Room on the 3rd floor of the Student Union for a lunchtime book discussion from 12-1 p.m. Members of the campus community will lead table discussions and encourage your thoughts and comments about Cami Walker’s 29 day giving challenge that changed her life.

Come a few minutes early and reserve your seat at a table. Brown bag it - dessert and drinks will be provided. Hope to see you there!

All attendees may participate in a drawing to win the 29 Gifts Starter Kit which includes a signed copy of the book, journal, bookmark and gift tags.

To get started reading this inspirational story pick up a copy of the One Book title, 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life by Cami Walker at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in the Power Center.

Two copies of the book are on reserve at the Gumberg Library. Ask at the Circulation Desk for the "One Book".

For more information about the author, 29 Gifts, and author talks in Pittsburgh during April, visit the Allegheny County Library Association Web site at http://onebookonecommunity.org/home/.
