How to Narrow a Preset Database Search: Gumberg Library

box

MLA International Bibliography

Say you click on a link to one of the pre-set database searches on the previous page and you get thousands of results (as you will with the MLA International Bibliography searches for Borges and Kafka). This is far too many citations to browse through. You need to narrow your search. How can you do this?

You will notice that at the top of the result screen, search boxes appear and one of them is still filled in with the search words from the previous search.

Let's say you want to find citations to materials on Kafka's novella The Metamorphosis. In the second search box type the name of the literary work you are interested in. Then click Search.

Or let's say you want to find citations to materials dealing with the theme of "alienation" in all the works of Kafka. In the second search box type "alienation". Then click Search.

Or, putting it all together, maybe you want to find materials that deal with the theme of "alienation" in the novella The Metamorphosis. In the second search box type the word "alienation" and in the third type the word "metamorphosis." Then click Search.

Literature Resource Center

To limit a preset search in Literature Resource Center, use the search box on the right side of the screen.

Whatever you type into the box will be added to the original search. After typing into the box, click the magnifying glass icon on the right side of the search box.

To add the name of a literary work or theme, just type the title or theme into the box and run the search. To look for a materials on a theme in a particular work type the name of the work, then the Boolean operator AND (in all caps), then the theme and run the search.

metamorphosis AND alienation

Literature Online

Literature Online does not retain your search terms once you run a search, meaning you cannot narrow a preset search. You would need to enter a completely new search into the search box on the upper right.

To find all materials on Kafka's work The Metamorphosis, you would type:

franz kafka AND metamorphosis

To find all materials on a theme in all of Kafka's works, you would type:

franz kafka AND alienation

To find all materials on a theme in a particular work, you would type:

franz kafka AND alienation AND metamorphosis
