How to Get Dissertations

If a dissertation of thesis is not available for free online, there are two possible options for obtaining it. (Reality Check: Though a increasing number of newer dissertations are open access, that is, available for free online, not all dissertation and theses are, and most dissertations from the past probably are not.)

If you decide that actually seeing a dissertation that is not available for free online is essential to you, your options for obtaining it would be:

  • Try to borrow a copy through ILLiad (Interlibrary loan)
  • Purchase it yourself from ProQuest

 

Borrow through ILLiad

Sometimes you can use ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan) to borrow a copy of the dissertation from another library. If you have never used ILLiad before, you will have to sign up for a free ILLiad account. It only takes a few minutes to do this, and then you will be able to use ILLiad to borrow books and obtain copies of articles from other libraries around the United States. ILLiad is a great service that you will find very useful as you do research for you dissertation, even if you never have to borrow copies of dissertations.

Purchase through ProQuest

ProQuest is the agent through which copies of most dissertations from the United States can be purchased by libraries or individuals. Sometimes purchasing a dissertation if the only way to see it.
