How to Find Author Biographies & Literary Criticism

Finding Author Biographies

To find books on the lives of children's authors, go to the QuickSearch Advanced Catalog Search screen. You can do this by clicking the blue button in the box on the left side of the screen.

In the first search box type the author's name, followed by the word "biography." Then pull down the menu to the left of the search box and change it to "Subject." Click Search to run your search.

Finding Literary Criticism on a Children's Author

As above, type the author's name in the first search box, followed by the word "criticism." Then change the menu to the left of the box to "Subject." Click Search to run your search.

Finding Criticism on a Work of Children's Literature

On the QuickSearch Advanced Catalog Search screen, type the name of the work of children's literature in the first search box and change the menu to the left of the box to "Subject.." Then click Search. This should take you to works of criticism on that work, if any such books are owned or accessible through the Gumberg Library.

Using the the QuickSearch Advanced Catalog Search

If you click on one of the subject headings on the previous page and find too many books to look through (as you will with the subject "Children - Books and reading"), you may want to use the QuickSearch Advanced Catalog Search to limit your results to more precisely what you are looking for.

To get to the QuickSearch Advanced Catalog Search, click on the blue button on the left side of the screen.

Now, let's say you wanted to use the QuickSearch Advanced Catalog Search to retrieve all the books on the subject of "Children - Books and reading" that deal with "comprehension." On the search screen, you would  type "Children books and reading" in the first search box and would pull down the menu to the left of it and change it to "Subject."  In the second box, you would type the word "comprehension." You could leave the menu to the left of the search box set to "Keyword."

Then you would click "Search" to run your search.
