Finding resources through QuickSearch begins from this search box. The classic Catalog tab will give you a more direct look at our library's print collection. You are able to conduct a keyword search.
To s
earch by
Title, Author, or Subjectselect "Advanced Search."

Keyword searching is less specific, but may provide more results. Be creative, come up with your own, and use keywords from the works you find to improve your future searches.

Examples of Keyword Searches:

  • Latin America AND poetry
  • Culture AND China
  • France AND folklore
  • Japan AND music
  1. Enter a keyword (or keywords) in the search box on the basic search screen (e.g."latin america") and click Search.
  2. Use Boolean operators, such as "and" and "or" if you want to use more than one search term (e.g. latin america AND poetry).

The results of your search query will be displayed in a results listing like the example below. For more information on an item, click on details. This displays the catalog record with information on the item's location, call number, and availability.

Advanced Searching in QuickSearch

Advanced Searching allows you to combine search terms and add limits. Typical limits include:

  • Format: limits to a type of material (book, DVD, musical score...)
  • Collection: limits to a specific collection in the library (AV, Curriculum Center, 4th Floor Reference...)
  • Language: limits the search to items in the language selected (Spanish, German, Italian...)

For example, to search for a documentary on the Spanish opera singer Dame Montserrat Caballé that is:

  1. In Spanish
  2. Available at Gumberg Library
  3. A DVD

You would select Format: "Video", Collection: "Gumberg Library", Language: Spanish - then Subject: "Caballé, Montserrat"

Your results are displayed in a list and you can select the item by clicking on details. This search yields one item, which you can select to view the catalog record with information on the item's location, call number, and availability. Clicking the blue title will direct you a more full description of the item, with information such as the ISBN, the subject, and a more detailed description.
